Master's in Business Administration

The master's degree program serves to extend business administration knowledge and academic debate regarding business administration issues. It builds on previous knowledge acquired by means of an applicable bachelor's degree program.

The "Master of Science of the University of Bern in Business Administration" master's degree program is completed over three semesters (standard duration of study) and is a mono program. Consequently, no subsidiaries (minors) are permitted.

Benefits of the MSc BA include the large selection of courses and the opportunity to organize study independently. The combination of theoretical and practical approaches to problems of business administration and independent working is the ideal starting point for a career in all functional areas of business or the public sector.

As stated in the Department of Business Management plan of studies 2007, the Business Administration program is worth 90 ECTS credits and consists of the following elements:

Special qualification (30-55 ECTS credits)

​​In the master's degree program for A5:C11 Administration (Department of Business Management), one of the following four special qualifications must be chosen:

  • Financial Management and Accounting (Institute of Financial Management and Institute for Accounting and Controlling)
  • Management (IMU-Management und IOP)
  • Marketing (IMU Marketing and IMU Consumer Behavior)
  • Information Systems (IWI)

In each special qualification area, coursework worth a minimum of 30 up to a maximum of 55 ECTS credits must be completed and submitted. The special qualification is split into the core area, the seminar area and the supplementary area:

Optional area (15-40 ECTS credits)

The optional area includes all courses for the Department of Business Management Master, which are not included in the special qualification selected. It is possible to obtain up to a maximum of 40 ECTS credits in the other three special qualification areas. A minimum of 15 ECTS credits is stipulated for the optional area.

Master's thesis (20 ECTS credits)

20 ECTS credits are awarded for successful completion of the master's thesis. Students are encouraged to contact the Institute in advance and in good time regarding the requirements, guidelines and procedure for writing their thesis. A seminar completed at the respective institute is often a prerequisite. The master's thesis can be written jointly by a maximum of three students. There is no obligation or even any requirement for the master's thesis to be written on the special qualification selected.

The Business Administration program is worth 90 ECTS credits and consists of the following elements:

Mandatory choice area (Wahlpflichtleistungen) (42 – 60 ECTS credits)

Subject Module (Fachmodul) 9-13.5 ECTS

  • Depending on the topic, each subject module consists of 2-3 courses. A subject module is passed, when all the corresponding courses are successfully completed.
  • A minimum of 4 and a maximum of 6 subject modules (Fachmodule) are mandatory (totally 36-54 ECTS)

Seminar 6 ECTS

  • At least one Business Administration seminar must be completed (any one). Attending a seminar at the respective institute is often a prerequisite.

Choice Area (Wahlleistungen) (10 – 28 ECTS)

Choice Module (Wahlmodul) 10-28 ECTS

  • Includes all BA courses that will not be credited as part of a subject module (Fachmodul)
    • Up to 9 ECTS can be attained by attending non-BA Master classes (i.e. Master courses offered by other departments or faculties)
      • Graded Master courses
      • Autonomous clarification with the respective institution, if preconditions apply and if crediting of single courses is possible
      • No language courses

Mandatory Area (Pflichtleistungen) 20 ECTS

Master Thesis (Masterarbeit)

  • A maximum of 3 student authors
  • A maximum 6 months allowed for editing
  • At least 45 ECTS credits should be attained to start a Master thesis
  • Depending on the institute, different preconditions are existing (i.e. courses or seminars with the corresponding institute). Please contact the institutes (or their websites) for prerequisites, guidelines and processes in advance.
  • There is no obligation, but also no claim, to write the Master thesis in the chosen focus.

Focus (Vertiefung)

  • Can be chosen optionally (no obligation)
  • Covers a minimum of 36 ECTS  and consists of:
    • At least 2 subject modules
    • Further courses from the choice module and/or seminars
    • For an overview of all possible foci according to the SP BWL 2015 see
      Appendix 2
  • Will be related to one of 4 areas:
    • Finance & Accounting 
    • Management
    • Marketing
    • Business Information Systems (Wirtschaftsinformatik)
  • Will be stated in the Diploma Supplement
  • If there is no chosen focus, a Master in (general) BA will be stated in the Diploma Supplement
  • The Master Thesis is not part of the focus
    No right of writing a Master thesis according to the chosen focus or the corresponding area exists.

Individual academic requirements

The following academic qualifications are required for admission to the master’s degree program in Business Administration (mono):

a) Bachelor's degree from a Swiss university in Business Administration (mono or major) *
b) Bachelor's degree from a Swiss university with at least 60 ECTS credits in the branch of studies Business administration / Management*
c) Bachelor's degree from a Swiss university with fewer than 60 ECTS credits in the branch of studies Business administration / Management*
d) Bachelor's degree from a recognized foreign university with at least 60 ECTS credits in the branch of studies Business administration / Management *
A GMAT score of at least 575 points for the mathematics (quantitative) and language (verbal) section is also required. This test result must be submitted with the application and documents. The test may not be taken retrospectively; it must be completed before the application is submitted.
e) Bachelor's degree from a Swiss university of applied sciences with at least 60 ECTS credits in the branch of studies Business administration / Management. Direct admission to the master’s degree program in Business Administration. Additional attainments of 60 ECTS credits will be required. These must be fulfilled in order to complete the master's degree program. The ECTS credits will be listed separately in the diploma supplement as extracurricular attainments.
* Additional attainments of up to 60 ECTS credits may be required. These can either be admission requirements which must be fulfilled in order to complete the master's degree program or admission requirements which must be fulfilled before admission to the master's degree program. The ECTS credits will be listed separately in the diploma supplement as extracurricular attainments.

The degree used for assessment purposes may not be more than six years old.
